A large central roundabout
with six avenues running into it, this is what a simplified plan of modern
Hamadan looks like. Nothing is left of ancient
Ecbatana, the Medes' capital before they formed a
union with the Persians. The poet Ferdowsi says
it was founded by Jamshid, a king who was maybe
somewhat hastily described as legendary. There
are not even a few old stones in any museum, and
there is not much to be said for a misshaped
"lion" similar to those which decorated the tombs of
Parthian officers. A more interesting sight for
tourists who may not have seen any before are the
Cuneiform rupestral inscriptions engraved on
a cliff at the bottom of a green valley about 10 kilometers
west of the city, the site is called Ganj_e Nameh.
Another interesting place near
to Hamadan to visit is Alisadr cave.Ali Sad, Alisard and better known
as Alisadr cave is the only pond cavern in Iran
and one of the rare ones in the world which is located
under the hights of Sari Ghayeh situated on the
48 degrees and 28 minutes parallel of longitude and on
the 35 degrees and 18 minutes parallel of altitude
and the approxiamate altitude of 2100 meters above
the sea level. This information was the first
motivation for the first Hamadani mountain climbers to
embark on the exploration in 1962-1963. This
measure later continued during the years 1966-1967 by a
group of climbers from Sinay-e-Hamadan completing
the discovery. They put a large entrance to the
cave and the news was published in the newspapers
in that time. The news was immediately
welcomed by forign and Iranian researchers, archeologists,
climbers, and cave travellers.
The Alisadr cave is geologically located in the
construction unit of western Iran between Sannandag
and Sirjan and in the northern outskirts of Zagross
mountain range. The black crystalaized calcareous
component which the Alisadr cave is made of belong
to Jurassic era which had been deposited 150
million years ago in the then sea bed.
At present, the tourist complex of Alisadr has
a 24-room hotel accomodating 100 persons, a
seven-rooms guesthouse, a restaurant, and other
amenities like villas made of wood, tents, and a
covered Bazarche. Besides hygienic services,
children's park, green area, telecommunication office,
and other facilities such as parking lot has
been constructed in an area of 15000 square meters. Also
the beatiful and facinating landscape in the
region is among other special privileges.
While lacking antique vestiges, Hamadan, has several
monuments worthy of interest. They are usually
mausoleums. Their exterior was recently renewed
by constructions inspired by the spindle - shaped
structure of Mongol towers, to the exclusion
of all other features of these towers. The best one covers
the Tomb of the famous Ibn Sina called Abu Ali
by the Persians and Avicenna by the Western world.
